Maastricht, The Netherlands

Maastricht developed from a Roman settlement to a thriving cultural and regional hub. It became well known through the Maastricht Treaty and as the birthplace of the euro. Maastricht has 1677 national heritage buildings (Rijksmonumenten), the second highest number in the Netherlands, after Amsterdam. The city is visited by tourists for shopping and recreation, and has a large international student population. And it hosts Europe's only multinational, cross-border civil-military air traffic control centre: the Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre

Hosted by EGATS

The Eurocontrol Guild of Air Traffic Services

EGATS is the professional association of EUROCONTROL Air Traffic Control staff. Founded in 1972, the intention had been to unite the operational staff of the different EUROCONTROL sites - at that stage, Shannon and Karlsruhe centres were being built. When those were re-nationalised, the so-called Maastricht Lodge of EGATS became its only component.
After some serious debate - as the professional associations of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany were already (founding) members of the Federation - EGATS joined IFATCA in 1975. Since then, it's been very active within the various working groups and in the Executive Board of the Federation. Despite this, this is the first time that EGATS hosts a regional meeting.
